Job Summary

The Postdoc will work for the Development of Sustainable Agricultural Production Systems in Degraded Areas of Karakalpakstan projects on different aspects of irrigation water management with a special focus on improving water use efficiency and safe use of different quality waters for irrigation through data collection, surveys, data analysis, data keeping, and reports and scientific papers writing. He/she will work along with other members of the Sustainable Natural Resource Management team on introducing and testing water conservation strategies for Karakalpakstan as well as testing and evaluating the technical and economic feasibility of different irrigation technologies.

Job Responsibilities
  • Undertake applied research related to the optimization of irrigation water use for Karakalpakstan and their impact on the environment.
  • Planning, developing and implementing projects related to improved irrigation management for agricultural production in Karakalpakstan.
  • Assist in the surveys and other data collection activities to be conducted in this project.
  • Derive results from compilation and synthesis of experimental data for the inferences and outputs to publish scientific reports and research papers in refereed journals
  • Prepare scientific reports and publications on area of expertise
  • Assist in the preparation of ICBA publications, including the newsletter
  • Supervise field assistants and irrigation team in Karakalpakstan experimental plots.
  • Assist the stakeholders (farmers, researchers, extension officers, and associated entrepreneurs) with technical backstopping
  • Assist in the organization of meetings with stakeholders.
Qualifications and Experience
  • A PhD in Agricultural Engineering/irrigation/water management (completed within last 5 years)
  • 2-3 years of field experience in data collection and analysis in irrigation projects.
  • Excellent knowledge of design, operation and maintenance of irrigation technologies (drip/sprinkler/surface).
  • Good knowledge to do field measurements of soil salinity, groundwater table depths, irrigation water applications, soil and water sampling etc.
  • Capacity to undertake field surveys and work in rough field conditions.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation (sensors, data loggers etc) and SCADA system will be a plus.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Experience working as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent communication, teamwork and writing skills

Disarible but not essential:

  • Knowledge of GIS/RS.
  • Knowledge of programming/coding
  • International work experience.
