The shrinking of the Aral Sea is widely considered one of the planet's worst environmental disasters. Its consequences range from salt and dust storms and loss of biological productivity and biodiversity to the deterioration of ecosystems, water supplies, and public health. This disaster affects the lives of millions of people in the Central Asian region.

A multi-stakeholder forum titled "Turning Agricultural and Environmental Challenges into Opportunities for Investment and Innovation in the Aral Sea Basin" in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, will discuss how science and innovation can help resolve the current problems and boost sustainable development and food security in the Aral Sea Basin.

On 8-9 August 2019 more than 80 delegates, including senior policymakers, representatives of international and regional development organizations, scientists, experts, and professionals from Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Uzbekistan will present and brainstorm innovative ideas and case studies.
