Investigation of Seawater Intrusion and Interrelationships between Aquifers Using Integrated Approach of Isotopes and Conventional Techniques

Twenty participants from Iraq, Jordan, Oman, Syria, UAE, and Yemen have completed their five days training course on ‘Investigation of Seawater Intrusion and Interrelationships between Aquifers Using Integrated Approach of Isotopes and Conventional Techniques’. This training was organized by the International Center for Biosaline Agriculture (ICBA) in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Dubai, from 7-11 September 2014.
The trainers included Mr Umaya Doss Saravana Kumar (KISR, Kuwait), Mr Kamel Zouari (Tunisia), and Dr Khalil Ammar (ICBA). The training lectures focused on basic concepts of hydro chemical, hydro-geological and isotopic techniques applied to address groundwater salinization problems with special emphasis on seawater intrusion. In addition to the theoretical approach, the training included hands on training.
Dr Ismahane Elouafi, Director General of ICBA, during the closing ceremony, expressed ICBA’s pleasure in organizing such course. She particularly focused on the importance of having highly technical trainings as science and technology are the hope for a better future in marginal environments. Dr Elouafi emphasized the need for substantial investment in science and technology and the importance of having more fora to share and debate acquired knowledge.
